As of 1st October 2023, it is now a legal requirement under Article 9 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 for Responsible Persons to have in place a written fire risk assessment. A Responsible Person is typically the employer (such as a sole trader or company), owner, or person in control of a premises.

A fire risk assessment is an organised and methodical look at your premises, the activities carried on there and the likelihood that a fire could start and cause harm to persons in and around the premises.
